Volunteers

Volunteers are the life blood of any science fiction (SF) convention (con), and SiliCon is no exception. If you've been to a few cons and would like to help out, we'd love to have you join us. The different types of help we can use are:

Mercury Runners
During the convention, the common phrase is "could you please run over to...," "could you please get this to X over in...," or some variant phrase like them. Merc Runners are the lubricant that helps a convention run smoothly.

For the middle- and high-school students needing to meet a volunteer requirement, this is one place that you can do it. Our volunteeer coordinator is working with local schools, so students can readily meet their requirements.

Requirements for Merc Runners include:

  • Minimum age of 14.
Parents/legal guardians must sign a permission/waiver form at the convention for their child to participate.
  • The ability to follow through on instructions.
  • The willingness to do this.

More information is available at the conventions operations (conops) office.

Before the Convention
We can use your help before the convention, too. Flyers need to be distributed, and items need to be transported to the convention hotel. If you're looking to get your volunteer hours up quickly, this can be a way to do it.

Convention Staff or Convention Committee (concom)
Yes, we can use your help here, too. The one legal requirement that we have is that you must be at least 18 years of age. Please take a look at the staff list and see where the position holes are. Then, follow the instructions on the staff list page.

Two publicity positions that need to be filled are:

  • Press Liaison
Make contacts and build working relationships with print, online, and broadcast journalists before and during SiliCon.

  • Marketing Director
A "go-getter" who not only comes up with ideas, but also has the ability to follow through on them.

After the Convention
Yes, help is needed after the convention. All the stuff that got transported to the hotel needs to be put away again. This means that it has to be transported back to the storage area or to whoever loaned us the equipment. This is also a great way to get your volunteer hours up quickly.
